Taking a pain history
When questioning patients about their pain, you should be looking to find out about the following aetiology:1,2
- Intensity/severity.
- Location and radiation of pain.
- Timing of pain.
- Quality of pain.
- Type of pain (e.g. sharp, dull, colicky etc.).
- Onset (e.g. sudden or gradual).
