Physical assessment

Any new complaint of pain could be the result of an underlying pathological process, which may need urgent attention. Ideally a full physical examination should be undertaken, aimed at reaching a diagnosis and establishing the most effective treatment.

Check changes in physical signs, such as:

  • Blood pressure.
  • Heart rate.
  • Breathing.

These signs can be altered in patients with pain, so may help to confirm the presence of chronic pain.
