A proactive approach to pain management

Chronic pain is a common problem that is inadequately managed.

  • GPs are often the first point of contact for patients with chronic pain, and have a key role in managing the problem proactively.
  • Chronic pain is very common in the elderly, who are more susceptible to pain-related problems. Older people are often reluctant to report pain and GPs need patience and persistence when asking about pain.9
  • Patient follow-up and ongoing assessment helps to evaluate treatment and the effectiveness of prescribed analgesia.
  • Appropriate and responsible use of strong opioids should be considered when paracetamol, NSAIDs and weak opioids have failed to control pain.3
