Treating chronic pain
Pain is a complex phenomenon that is influenced by a variety of social, biological and psychological factors.1
Before treatment, all patients should undergo a detailed clinical assessment in order to establish the nature of the pain and to exclude any underlying pathology.
Pharmacological management is only one component of a person’s management plan, and the use of drugs in the management of pain should be tailored to meet the needs of each individual.2 Any pain management plan should address all aspects of the patient’s suffering.
